DeSantis Introduces Bill to Protect State Sanctions Against Iran

Feb 3, 2016
Press Release

Washington, DC – Rep. Ron DeSantis (FL-06) today introduced the State Sanctions Against Iranian Terrorism Act to protect state-level sanctioning authority against Iran from executive interference. This legislation is increasingly necessary as Iran continues to flout international sanctions.

“States such as Florida that have imposed sanctions against Iran play a vital role in protecting the security of the American people,” DeSantis said. “The Obama administration's disastrous nuclear deal with Iran was neither ratified as a treaty nor adopted as statutory law, and therefore cannot preempt valid state laws. The State Sanctions Against Iranian Terrorism Act will preserve, protect, and enhance the authority of individual states to pass laws ensuring that their dollars do not flow to the world’s leading state-sponsor of terrorism. ”

The State Sanctions Against Iranian Terrorism Act provides that state sanctions passed pursuant to the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2010 (CISADA) are not preempted by any Federal law, regulation, policy, or agreement. Furthermore, the State Sanctions Against Iranian Terrorism Act expands CISADA’s protection to allow states to control significant commerce with Iranian businesses, including those owned by the Government of Iran and its instrumentalities like the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

DeSantis, joined by several members of the Florida congressional delegation, previously sent a letter to Florida Governor Rick Scott, House Speaker Steve Crisafulli, and Senate President Andy Gardiner, commending the state legislature for their strong sanctions against Iran.
