DeSantis Vows to Continue Investigation of DHS

Dec 15, 2015
Press Release

Washington, DC – Following last week’s National Security Subcommittee hearing held by Rep. Ron DeSantis (FL-06) that raised serious concerns regarding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and their management of the visa waiver program, recent media reports have further highlighted vulnerabilities at DHS that could impact their ability to screen for potential terrorists. These include the department’s failure to examine social media posts from San Bernardino terrorist Tashfeen Malik indicating her desire to partake in the jihad and a whistleblower’s allegation that his investigation of radical Islamic networks was shut down because it was “problematic.”

“The duty of DHS is to protect our homeland from those who wish to do us harm, and the agency is failing to address potential national security threats,” DeSantis said. “Last week, DHS continually evaded questioning before the National Security Subcommittee, and now reports indicate that DHS has been lax regarding security threats posed by those entering our country. These lapses are unacceptable and I will continue to investigate whether or not DHS is adequately performing their duties.”

DeSantis, along with Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Jason Chaffetz (UT-03), has sent a letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson asking for any documents relating to Tashfeen Malik, in order to continue the committee’s investigation into weaknesses within our nation’s visa programs.
