Yesterday, the White House made the announcement that instead of cutting fraud and abuse in their budget, they would indefinitely suspend public, self-guided, White House tours. This decision leaves thousands of Americans with planned trips to Washington, D.C. unable to visit the White House. In response to this unilateral decision by the White House, Rep. DeSantis (FL-06) issued the following statement:

“Under sequestration, the White House should be looking to eliminate wasteful spending in their budget, such as the $277,050 they spend each year to employ 3 calligraphers. Instead, the White House has decided to ban our nation’s citizens from attending tours of the People’s House.

Unlike the White House, I have effectively managed my office budget – making cuts where necessary – and my staff will continue to offer tours of the United States Capitol, as I believe that serving my constituents is the most important part of my job.

For my constituents who were hoping to visit the White House, I want you to know that my office is still open for business and we will be happy to arrange a Capitol tour for you.”
