St. Augustine, FL – Rep. Ron DeSantis (FL-06) announced today that Daria Hughes, a student at Seabreeze High School, won the 2016 Congressional Art Competition with her watercolor titled “Medley.” The winning artwork can be seen here. Hughes will receive complimentary airfare for herself and a guest to attend an unveiling ceremony at the United States Capitol, where her artwork will be displayed for one year.
“Every year, I enjoy seeing the creative and colorful pieces of art submitted by our high school students,” DeSantis said. “Congratulations to Daria for winning this year's competition with her beautiful watercolor. I look forward to seeing it hanging in the Capitol! It is my hope that every participant continues to foster their artistic talents.”
Entries were posted on DeSantis’ Facebook page for one week and over 2,000 votes were cast by constituents to determine the finalists. The ten submissions with the most “likes” were then presented to Kim Carney, Flagler Beach City Commissioner; Art LaMay, a local artist and professional art judge; and Charles Schaefer, a local artist and owner of the Charles Schaefer Art Studio. The judges determined a winner during a reception held at the Ocean Art Gallery in Flagler Beach.
