Washington, DC – The House Committee on Foreign Affairs today voted to send H.Res. 259, introduced by Rep. Ron DeSantis (FL-06), to the House floor for consideration. This bipartisan resolution condemns the political, social, economic, and humanitarian crises in Venezuela.

“President Maduro’s continued attempts to dismantle democracy and trample human rights in Venezuela are disgraceful and must be denounced,” DeSantis said. “The so-called “Constituent Assembly” scheduled for July 30 is a violation of the constitution and part of Maduro’s bid to seize complete control of the country. Today’s vote sends a clear message to the people of Venezuela: we hear your cries for freedom.”

The resolution urges the Government of Venezuela to suspend the convening of the Constituent Assembly, to heed the calls of the international community to hold free and fair elections, and to open a channel for humanitarian assistance.

DeSantis applauds the Administration’s action to sanction those responsible for the deterioration of democratic institutions and the rule of law in Venezuela and, with this resolution, encourages President Donald Trump to apply additional pressure on the Maduro regime.
