Washington, DC – In response to President Barack Obama’s final State of the Union address, Rep. Ron DeSantis (FL-06) has issued the following statement:

“President Obama's tenure has been defined by the massive expansion of bureaucracy and red tape, a ballooning of the national debt, a habitual disregard for the Constitution and the separation of powers, and a weak national security posture that has invited major threats and paved the way for the growth of militant Islam.  The country is in a malaise and a new policy direction is urgently needed.

The President boasted of his deal with Iran and his commitment to releasing terrorists from Gitmo, yet these policies have weakened our national security by empowering Iran and placing hardened terrorists back into circulation.  As a veteran, I am truly shocked that the President crowed about providing care for veterans; the VA is still in shambles and many veterans have been left out in the cold.  The lack of urgency that the President has exhibited regarding the need to provide care for our veterans has been unbecoming of a commander-in-chief.

The American people have not reaped the benefits of this so-called economic recovery, as workforce participation is anemic and median income is lower than when the President took office.  The deluge of regulations and the burdens of bureaucracy have stifled innovation and capital formation, thereby restraining the economy's growth rate.  ObamaCare, the President's signature piece of legislation, has caused premiums and deductibles to skyrocket and has placed serious strains on the budgets of American families.

The bottom line is that the nation needs to see significant policy reforms.  President Obama's speech tonight demonstrates that he is out of touch with the concerns of the American people."
